Familiars and animal companions A quick question... I wanted to try the game with a wizard character...and I noticed you didn't get to choose the name or type of animal for your familiar. Does your familar change as you get more powerful, or is it an alignement thing? And as a ranger, I found it odd that there were LESS choices for your animal companion then there was in the original nwn.
Another question, which applies to both games: how come when you have a spellcasting henchman (like Nathyrra or Qara) they don't have familiars/companions?

Don't know about Qara since I never use her - but Sand has one and so does the druid chick. (I can't remember her name 'cause I don't use her either...)

Quara has a weasel. I use her in my evil game.

You CAN choose your familiar - if you choose to adjust your class package during character creation. You know, you can choose to be a illusionist or an evoker - or create your own package and then you are also able to choose your own familiar and its name. The choices are pig, bug, spider, cat, weasel, bat and... I think that's it.
I don't know if they get more levels though... familiars always keep out of fights contrary to animal companions who fight with their masters.
I don't know why Nathyrra doesn't have a companion - maybe her AI just doesn't allow her to summon it but Quara and Sand defintely have familiars, just like Elanee and Bishop have animal compaions - badger and Wolf respectively. Sand's companion is a cat named Jaral, if I recall it correctly. If you have MotB they summon them automatically or you have to activate their summoning over the character page. Not a good idea though, it causes some annoying bugs.

Whu? Nathyrra is a spell caster? I thought she was a rogue or assassin or something along those lines. Deekin is the resident spell caster, I thought.

Yep. She's a wizard. If I remember right, that was actually her highest class level in the game I played last.

Nathyrra? So who does Nathyrra have for a familiar?

Well... she has the 'summon Familiar' feat but there's no way to command her to summon her familiar in the game. I think the developers probably didn't give her a specific familiar since her AI doesn't allow her to summon it during the game so she probably has the bat - its the first familiar in the list and the familiar you automatically have when you summon it at first level.
I don't know of a way to check it though.

I always assumed that she just scares away little animals. That, or she sacrificed it for the seer's cause or freed it because it reminded her too much of her time as an assassin. It may also be possible that she was never interested in one. Does anyone remember what she said when the PC pet the scrivener in Cania? "Such sentimentality. If we drow want a pet we harvest one from the slave pens."
...But if she did have one, I bet it would be a little poodle named Moondance or Snuggles. Or, to be serious, maybe a giant spider or a raven. Both seem suited to her.
